Quit the race baiting critiques about Congressman Lawler

*This Letter to the Editor appeared in the April 10, 2025 - May 7, 2025 edition of The Mt. Kisco-Bedford Times

Dear Editor,

In light of the fury and rage over Congressman Mike Lawler's response to Westchester County Board of Legislators Vice Chair Jose Alvarado's question asking what papers would be necessary if stopped by immigration authorities ('Show me your papers,' March 13, Page 19), I decided to Google the meeting of Feb. 18.

I saw an exchange that was very civil and professional. There is no need for fury and rage - nor for an apology.

I suspect the real fury and rage is due to the fact that Rep. Lawler has an "R" next to his name.

The recent extreme behavior/antics of our Democratic "leaders" is abhorrent to say th eleast.

The vulgar tirades in front of microphones and cameras, the childish Tik-Tok dances, the threats of violence.

It's no surprise a recent CNN poll shows Democrats have a 29% approval rating; NBC shows 27% viewing the Democrats positively and 55% viewing them negatively. This is an all-time low.

As former Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently said, "the party needs clarity of purpose, discipline and coordination. None of this exists right now."

I'd also like to call out our own Legislator, Erika Pierce, for trying to villainize Rep. Lawler in her guest column, "Show me your papers," and imply he is a racist. He is no racist.

Yes, Rep. Lawler supports the SAVE ACT. Why is it an issue to require proof of citizenship when registering to vote?

As many elections are won/lost by very narrow margins, just a few bad actors can make a difference.

I shipped a package at FedEx last week. I was asked for my identification. I complied, paid, shipped my package. Easy-peezy. Not racist!

So please - stop the undignified antics, the vulgarities, the race baiting, the pearl clutching!

To quote Rodney King, "Can't we all just get along?"
